Improving As One

End of First Week Review...

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope the first week with your children at home has been bearable!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you all for your response to this
unprecedented situation – it has been noticed and much appreciated.
I am very aware of the possible challenges of trying to ensure your children are
learning – remember – most of you are not teachers and we do not expect you to be.

There is no expectation of how many of the learning tasks set are completed or for
how long. These are very stressful times for everybody and it is more important that
everybody remains calm, than that the last task is done. Each household is different,
each family is different, each set of circumstances is different – there is no ‘one size
fits all’. Each family needs to do what is best for them.

I would strongly suggest that very few children will manage more than 20 – 30
minutes focusing on the tasks that we have offered. For younger children, 15 minutes
would be a maximum. We suggest that little and often is better than a longer period.

Also, try to vary the activities you do with them as well as focus on the key basic skills
of reading, writing and arithmetic. We would suggest no more than 2 hours a day.
There are more than enough learning tasks to keep your child/children busy for an
hour or two a day until the Easter holidays. There will be no tasks set during the
Easter holidays but the ideas and resources will be refreshed after Easter.

When all of this is over and normal school resumes, we will have to do a lot of revision
work with children so all anyone can do at this time is their best. The good news is,
that having to remember what you have been taught is good for all of us and helps us
to retain it for a long time afterwards.

Please stay safe, keep positive and remember that academic progress at a time like
this is less important than everyone’s wellbeing.

Kindest regards to you all
