At The Winchcombe School we offer a rich, balanced and progressive maths curriculum and have adopted a mastery approach to teaching mathematics. We believe in promoting a sustained and deepened understanding by employing a variety of mastery strategies as well as incorporating our schools’ big ideas. Therefore, through investigation, comparison and creative problem-solving tasks, teaching for conceptual understanding is at the heart of everything we do. Our mastery approach embeds a deeper understanding of maths by utilising a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach so pupils understand what they are doing rather than just learning to repeat routines without grasping what is happening. Underpinning this pedagogy is the belief that all children can achieve in maths.
Our curriculum is mapped out across the school to allow a clear progression with age related expectations. Within each classroom, individual class working walls aid children’s understanding through the current maths teaching. Additionally, from Years 2 – 6 each class displays and promotes TT Rock Stars competitions and celebrations. Children have the opportunity to use a wide range of resources to support their learning such as hundred squares, number lines, numicon, cubes, place value cards and other small apparatus.
At the Winchcombe School we have a supportive ethos and our approach supports the children in developing their collaborative and independent mathematical skills. Children can underperform in Mathematics because they think they can’t do it or are not naturally good at it. At the Winchcombe School we aim to address these preconceptions by ensuring that all children experience challenge and success in Mathematics by developing a growth mindset. Regular and ongoing assessment informs teaching, as well as intervention, to support and enable the success of each child.
